Grade 1 Math Lesson Plan: Telling Time — o'clock and half past

About This Resource

A 4-page, minute-by-minute plan for 3 lessons (3 lessons × 40 minutes) on telling time: objectives, vocabulary, differentiation, misconceptions and teacher tips.

Overview

Young learners discover what the two hands of a clock do before they read times. The short hour hand shows the hour; the long minute hand goes all the way around once every hour. When the minute hand points to 12 it is o'clock; when it points to 6 it has gone half way around, so it is half past. Students read and show times on clocks, match analog and digital times, and connect times to their daily routine.

Grade 1 40 Minutes Time Telling Math

Learning Objectives

  • Name the parts of a clock: face, numbers, hour hand (short) and minute hand (long).
  • Read and show o'clock times on an analog clock.
  • Read and show half past times, and explain that the hour hand is between two numbers.
  • Match analog times to digital times (3:00, 3:30).
  • Order daily events and say when they happen.

Lesson Procedure

  • Read the overview and success criteria before teaching.
  • Lesson 1 — The clock and o'clock (40 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Lesson 2 — Half past (40 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Lesson 3 — Digital clocks and my day (40 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Use the matching PowerPoint, worksheet and assessment from this pack — the plan refers to their slide and part numbers.

Assessment

Exit tickets in each lesson. Paper plate clock checks: "Show me half past 4." Worksheet Parts A–E with the answer key. Quick Quiz (8 marks) after lesson 2. Unit Test (24 marks) at the end. Performance task (rubric): "My Day" — show and say 4 times from my day.

Differentiation

Support: Focus on o'clock until it is secure; then half past. Challenge: Show the time one hour later / half an hour later. English language learners: Teach: long hand, short hand, o'clock, half past with actions (arms as clock hands).

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Human Clock (10 minutes, Whole class): Two students lie down or stand in the middle: a short one is the hour hand, a tall one is the minute hand (or use a short and a long rope). Call a time; the "hands" point to the right numbers.
  • Clock Snap (10 minutes, Pairs): Shuffle the clock and digital cards together. Players turn cards over one at a time.
  • What Time Do You…? (8 minutes, Pairs): Student A asks: "What time do you eat breakfast?" Student B shows the time on the clock and says, "I eat breakfast at 7 o'clock."

Teacher Tips

A geared teaching clock (hands move together) is the best tool for half past. Act it out: one student is the hour hand (walks slowly), one is the minute hand (runs around).
