Grade 1 Math Teacher Resources: Patterns — Games, Activities and Exit Tickets

Learning Objectives

• Copy, continue and create repeating patterns (AB, AAB, ABB, ABC).
• Find the part of a pattern that repeats (the core).
• Find a missing part of a pattern.
• Continue number patterns that count on by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, and count back by 2s.
• Describe a pattern in simple words, e.g. "red, blue, red, blue".

How to Use This Resource

• Fix My Pattern: Student A makes a pattern with 8 pieces and secretly makes ONE mistake.
• Body Patterns: Do a pattern: clap, clap, stamp. Students copy it.
• Pattern Necklaces: Choose 2 or 3 colors.
• Exit tickets: hand out in the last 3–5 minutes and sort into got it / nearly / not yet.

Differentiation

Support: Use real blocks for every question before drawing. Challenge: Make ABC and AABB patterns, or patterns that change two things (color AND shape). English language learners: Teach the sentence: "The pattern is ___, ___. Next is ___."

Teacher Tips

Patterns are everywhere: clothes, tiles, songs, the days of the week. Point them out every day. Always ask students to SAY the pattern aloud — it helps them hear the repeat.
