Learning Objectives

  • Explain when and why we use the passive voice.
  • Form the passive with be + past participle in the present simple, past simple, present perfect and future, and with modal verbs.
  • Use the past participles of common regular and irregular verbs correctly.
  • Change active sentences into the passive and decide when to include "by + agent".
  • Use the passive to describe a process and to write a short news report.

Lesson Procedure

  • Lesson 1 — What is the passive? (50 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Lesson 2 — Past and present perfect passive (50 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Lesson 3 — Future and modal passives (50 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Lesson 4 — Passive in writing (50 min): follow the stage table (warm-up, teach, practice, exit ticket).
  • Use the matching PowerPoint, worksheet and assessment from this pack — the plan refers to their slide and part numbers.
