Grade 10 Future Plans and Ambitions Vocabulary Worksheet

About This Resource

A three-page vocabulary worksheet for Grade 10 ESL students covering twelve key career and future-plans terms. Students match words to definitions, complete sentences, sort words into categories, and write their own sentences using the new vocabulary.

Overview

This worksheet builds a working vocabulary of twelve career and future-plans terms — ambition, career path, further education, vocational training, entrepreneur, scholarship, internship, promotion, qualification, work experience, goal, and apply for — through four different activity types. Students begin with a matching exercise linking each word to its definition, move to a fill-in-the-blank exercise using the words in context, sort the words into three meaningful categories (Further Study, Work and Career, Personal Drive), and finish with a short personal-writing task using three of the words in their own sentences.

Classroom Use

  • Turn the completed Your Turn sentences into a short "guess the word" game: collect a few anonymous sentences (with the vocabulary word blanked out) and read them aloud for the class to guess which word is missing.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow students to use the word bank as a reference throughout all four sections rather than only for matching, and reduce the Your Turn task to one sentence instead of three.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four sections as designed.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to write a fourth Your Turn sentence that uses two vocabulary words in the same sentence, or to write a short definition of a word in their own words rather than copying the worksheet's definition.

Answer Key & Assessment

Collect the completed worksheet and check the matching and fill-in-the-blank sections against the answer key. Review the Your Turn sentences for correct and natural use of the target vocabulary rather than grading them as right or wrong.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to define twelve career and future-plans vocabulary words.
  • Students will be able to use the target vocabulary correctly in a sentence.
  • Students will be able to classify career and future-plans vocabulary into logical categories.
  • Students will be able to write original sentences using target vocabulary.

Teacher Tips

For the Sort the Words activity, ask one or two pairs to justify a borderline choice (for example, whether "vocational training" belongs with Work and Career or Personal Drive) out loud to the class — it turns a simple sorting task into a genuine vocabulary discussion.
