About This Resource

A partner speaking activity in which Grade 10 ESL students interview each other about their future plans, practising going to and will along with career and future vocabulary in spoken English.

Overview

This activity gives students six interview questions covering plans after school, further study versus vocational training, predictions about the future, upcoming goals, personal ambitions, and where they might live. Working in pairs, students take turns interviewing each other, using the Useful Language box to give opinions, ask follow-up questions, and express predictions. A record table lets students note down their partner's answers to three questions, and a self and peer check at the end helps students reflect on how well they used the target language.

How to Use This Resource

Pair students up and have them decide who will interview first. Remind students to have the Useful Language box open in front of them and to use going to or will in each answer. The interviewer should ask at least one follow-up question during the interview. Circulate while pairs are talking, listening for accurate future-tense use and vocabulary rather than interrupting the flow of conversation. Have students complete the record table for three questions, then switch roles and repeat. Use the self and peer check as a short wrap-up reflection.

Classroom Activity Ideas

After the paired interviews, ask a few volunteers to share one interesting thing they learned about their partner's future plans with the whole class, using reported language ("She told me she is going to...").

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow students to write out their answers before speaking, using a sentence frame from the Useful Language box, and pair weaker speakers with a supportive partner.
ON-LEVEL: Students interview each other using all six questions, alternating who leads.
CHALLENGE: Ask stronger students to ask two follow-up questions per answer instead of one, or to summarise their partner's plan back to them at the end of the interview.

Assessment

Use the completed record table as a light-touch written check of whether each pair engaged with the task, and use the self and peer check for student reflection. For a more formal spoken assessment, apply this topic's Grading Rubric while circulating during the interviews.

Teacher Tips

Model the interview yourself with one confident student in front of the class before pairs begin — hearing a natural follow-up question in action makes it much easier for students to attempt one themselves.
