About This Resource

A small-group speaking activity in which Grade 9 ESL students discuss six environment-related debate statements, practising how to give an opinion, agree, disagree, and support their view with a reason in spoken English.

Overview

This activity gives students six original debate statements covering realistic environmental issues (banning plastic bags, requiring reusable water bottles, spending on public transport versus roads, illegal tree-cutting, mandatory rubbish sorting, and the impact of fast fashion). Working in small groups, students take turns reading a statement aloud, giving their opinion using the Useful Language box, and responding to their groupmates' opinions. A record table lets groups note down their opinion and one supporting reason for three statements, and a self and peer check at the end helps students reflect on how well they used the target language.

How to Use This Resource

Divide students into groups of three or four. Assign or let groups choose which statements to discuss, and set a time limit (3-4 minutes per statement works well) to keep the pace moving. Remind students to have the Useful Language box open in front of them and to use at least one phrase from it per turn. Circulate while groups are talking, listening for opinion language and vocabulary use rather than interrupting the flow of discussion. Have groups complete the record table for three statements, and use the self and peer check as a short wrap-up reflection.

Classroom Activity Ideas

After the small-group rounds, hold a very short whole-class debate on just one statement, calling on one representative from each group to share their group's opinion and reasoning to the full class.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow students to write out their opinion sentence before speaking, using a sentence frame from the Useful Language box, and pair weaker speakers with a supportive partner who can help them find words if needed.
ON-LEVEL: Students discuss all six statements in their groups, alternating who leads each one.
CHALLENGE: Ask stronger students to give a follow-up question to a groupmate's opinion (for example, "What about...?") rather than simply agreeing or disagreeing, to push the discussion further.

Assessment

Use the completed record table as a light-touch written check of whether each group engaged with the task, and use the self and peer check for student reflection. For a more formal spoken assessment, apply this topic's Grading Rubric while circulating during the group discussions.

Teacher Tips

Rotate which student in each group reads the statement aloud each time — it keeps everyone engaged and ensures reading practice, not just speaking practice, is shared around the group rather than falling to the same one or two confident students.
