About This Resource

A three-page reading activity built around a passage comparing two students choosing different future paths — university and vocational training — giving Grade 10 ESL students practice with comprehension, evidence-finding, and forming their own opinion.

Overview

The centrepiece of this resource is an original passage, "Two Paths, Two Goals," about Mai, who plans to study nursing at university, and Bayani, who plans to enrol in vocational training in automotive mechanics. The passage presents both paths as equally valid, respecting the topic's Section 1B localization standard by avoiding any claim about a specific country's education system. After reading, students complete a True or False comprehension check, then a Find the Evidence activity in which they locate and record details supporting each student's plan — a more active task than simple multiple choice. Two short-answer questions check inference, and a final Your Opinion task asks students to state and justify which plan they find more interesting.

How to Use This Resource

Have students read the passage silently first, then aloud in pairs or as a class to support pronunciation and pacing. Complete the True or False section as a quick comprehension check before moving to the more demanding Find the Evidence task, which asks students to locate and paraphrase specific details rather than just recognise them. The short-answer questions and Your Opinion task can be completed independently, in pairs, or as a written homework task.

Classroom Activity Ideas

After completing the worksheet, hold a short class vote: whose plan do you find more interesting, Mai's or Bayani's? Ask a few students on each side to share the reason from their Your Opinion answer, using a phrase from this topic's Grammar or Speaking resources.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Read the passage aloud to the class first, or provide a simplified word list for key vocabulary (such as "vocational," "commitment," or "hands-on") before students read independently.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all sections independently after a guided first reading.
CHALLENGE: Ask stronger students to find a fourth piece of evidence for each character's plan, or to write a short paragraph (not just a sentence) for the Your Opinion task, including a counter-argument they disagree with.

Assessment

Check the True or False section and short-answer questions against the answer key. Review the Find the Evidence table for accurate, text-based details rather than invented ones, and assess the Your Opinion response for a clearly stated opinion with at least one supporting reason.

Teacher Tips

Before students start the Find the Evidence table, ask the class to find just one piece of evidence for Mai's plan together, out loud, so everyone understands what counts as evidence (rather than a general summary) before they continue independently.
