Grade 2 Weather and Seasons Reading Activity: “The Four Seasons” Passage

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to read an 8-sentence connected passage using topic vocabulary.
• Students will be able to answer multiple-choice and short-answer comprehension questions about the passage.
• Students will be able to identify a synonym used in context within the passage.

How to Use This Resource

• Use on Day 4 of the Unit Lesson Plan. Read the passage aloud together first, then have students answer the comprehension questions independently. The passage also works well as a model text before the Writing Activity.

Classroom Activity Ideas

• After answering the questions, have partners take turns reading one sentence of the passage aloud each, practicing fluency with the topic vocabulary.

Differentiation

Support: Read the passage aloud twice, and allow students to underline the sentence containing each answer before writing it.
On-Level: Read independently or in a shared read-aloud, then complete all questions independently.
Challenge: Ask students to rewrite one sentence of the passage using a different season than the one it originally describes.

Assessment

Score the Comprehension Questions and Short Answer sections against the included answer key. The Challenge is open-ended and best used as an informal writing or speaking check.

Teacher Tips

Point out the word “fall” in the passage and ask if anyone knows another word for it before students reach the short-answer question that asks exactly this — a quick pre-teach moment that pays off immediately.
