Grade 2 Daily Routines Reading Activity: Putri's Busy Day

About This Resource

A 120-word reading passage about a school day in Southeast Asia, paired with four comprehension activities — multiple choice, short answer, vocabulary in context, and a personal writing and drawing task — for Grade 2 English learners.

Overview

This resource gives students a chance to meet the Daily Routines vocabulary and present simple grammar inside a real short story rather than isolated sentences. "Putri's Busy Day" follows a child through a full day, from waking up to going to bed, using short, level-appropriate sentences and a coastal Southeast Asian setting. Activity 1 checks basic comprehension with multiple choice questions. Activity 2 asks students to answer in full sentences, building writing stamina. Activity 3 (Find the Word) develops vocabulary-in-context skills by asking students to locate a word in the passage that matches a clue or definition. Activity 4 (About Me) turns the reading into a personal writing and drawing task, asking students to complete sentences about their own routine and illustrate their favourite after-school activity.

Grade 2 45-55 Minutes Reading

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to answer multiple-choice questions about a short reading passage.
  • Students will be able to write full-sentence answers to short-answer comprehension questions.
  • Students will be able to locate a specific word in a text using a meaning-based clue.
  • Students will be able to write simple sentences describing their own daily routine.

How to Use This Resource

  • Read the passage aloud as a class first, or have students read it silently once they are comfortable with the Daily Routines vocabulary. Work through Activity 1 together to model how to find answers in the text, then let students complete Activities 2 and 3 independently or in pairs, referring back to the passage as needed. Activity 4 works well as a closing task or homework, since it connects the story back to students' own lives and gives you a quick, personal writing sample from each student.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • After finishing the worksheet, have students work in pairs to retell Putri's day using only the pictures from the Daily Routines Flashcards, without looking at the passage. This checks whether they absorbed the story's content and sequence, not just the answers to the written questions.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Read the passage aloud slowly, pointing to each sentence, before students attempt the activities independently. Allow students to answer Activity 2 with short phrases rather than full sentences if needed.
ON-LEVEL: Students read the passage independently and complete all four activities within a normal lesson period.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to write one additional true/false statement about the story for a partner to answer, or to extend their Activity 4 answers with a reason ("After school, I play badminton because it is fun.").

Assessment

Mark Activities 1–3 against the included answer key. Review Activity 4 for sentence completeness and topic-appropriate vocabulary rather than for perfect accuracy, since it is a personal, open-ended writing task.

Teacher Tips

Before students start Activity 3, model the process once on the board: read the clue aloud, think aloud about what kind of word you're looking for, then scan the passage together to find it. Grade 2 English learners often don't yet have a strategy for "scanning" a text for a specific word, so showing them once saves a lot of confusion.
