Grade 2 ESL Test: My Home — Paper and Speaking Check (30 Marks)

About This Resource

A 30-mark unit test: listen and circle, look and write, read and match (room actions) and a short reading (Arif's House) with Yes / No questions (20 marks), plus a 10-mark one-to-one speaking check with a Show-Me Card and a class record sheet, and a full answer key.

Overview

This pack teaches Grade 2 learners to talk about their own home — a house or an apartment — in simple, useful English. Children learn 6 rooms (living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, dining room, garden), 12 things in a home (bed, sofa, TV, table, chair, fridge, bathtub, toilet, door, window, clock, mirror), what we do in each room ("I sleep in the bedroom." / "I cook in the kitchen.") and the four place words in, on, under and next to ("Where's the cat? It's under the table."). They read Linh's Home (Linh lives in an apartment in Ho Chi Minh City) and write about their own home and favorite room. Every picture of in / on / under / next to is drawn from the side, so each item has one clear answer. The pack uses two chants, Hide and Find with a toy cat, Where Is It? pair cards, a class home survey and a two-team game. This listing covers the Test only.

Question Types & Suggested Use

Paper 20 marks (5 + 5 + 5 + 5) + speaking 10 marks (5 items × 2) = 30. Bands: 27–30 Excellent, 21–26 Good, 15–20 Developing, 0–14 Needs practice.

Skills Assessed

  • Name 6 rooms (living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, dining room, garden) and say "I live in a house / an apartment."
  • Name 12 things in a home (bed, sofa, TV, table, chair, fridge, bathtub, toilet, door, window, clock, mirror) and say which room they are in: "The fridge is in the kitchen."
  • Say what we do in each room: "I sleep in the bedroom." / "I cook in the kitchen."
  • Ask and answer "Where's the cat?" with in, on, under and next to: "It's under the table."
  • Read a short text (Linh's Home) and answer Yes / No and gap questions.
  • Write 3–4 sentences about their own home and favorite room.

How to Administer

  • Read the listening script on the answer key two times for Part A. While the class does Parts B–D, call children one at a time for the Speaking Check (page 3). Record all scores on the class record (page 4).

Differentiation

Support: Teach 4 rooms first (bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living room) and add dining room and garden in Lesson 2. Let children point before they speak, and keep the room flashcards on the board. Use only in and on at first, then add under and next to. In writing, children copy from the word bank and the example sentences.

Extension: Children describe a room in 3 sentences ("The bed is next to the window. The teddy bear is on the bed."), add more things (lamp, desk, sink, wardrobe) or the words behind and in front of. Strong readers read Linh's Home aloud and write about their dream home.

Follow-Up Activities

  • Practise the speaking questions in pairs the lesson before.
  • Use the Show-Me Card so every child sees the same pictures.

Teacher Tips

Keep a toy cat (or any soft toy) and a cardboard box in the classroom for the whole unit. Moving a real toy in, on, under and next to a real box, chair and table makes the four place words clear in seconds — far clearer than pictures alone — and Hide and Find becomes the game children ask for every day. Also clap on "the" whenever children say a room ("in — THE — kitchen"): most Asian languages have no word like "the", so "I sleep in bedroom" is the mistake to expect.
