Grade 2 Math Unit Test: Multiplication Facts (30 Marks)

Question Types & Suggested Use

Performance bands: 25–30 Excellent, 19–24 Good, 13–18 Developing, 0–12 Needs Practice. Word problems have 1 mark for the times sentence and 1 for the answer; Section I (explain) has a 2-mark scheme in the key.

Skills Assessed

• Describe equal groups and arrays as "__ groups of __" and "__ rows of __".
• Write a repeated addition as a multiplication (4 + 4 + 4 = 3 × 4).
• Use turn-around facts (3 × 4 = 4 × 3).
• Skip count by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 10s to find a product.
• Recall the facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables (up to × 10).
• Solve one-step word problems with equal groups and write a number sentence.

How to Administer

• Give the test in the optional fourth lesson after the review slide. Read each section instruction aloud. Record section scores in the score summary box to see which objectives need reteaching.

Differentiation

Support: Let children use counters and paper plates for every question, and give them the Times Tables Chart with the rows they have not learned yet covered. Teach the 2s, 10s and 5s first and add the 3s and 4s only when these are secure. Use sentence frames ("There are ___ groups of ___.") and the fact tracker so children can see their own progress. Pair a child who is new to English with a partner who models the key sentences.

Extension: Find all the arrays for 12 (1 × 12, 2 × 6, 3 × 4 …), solve two-step problems (3 boxes of 10 eggs; 5 eggs are used), write a word problem for 4 × 7 and swap it with a partner, or play Fact Rocket! with all five tables in Mix mode.

Follow-Up Activities

• Use the section scores to form small reteach groups (e.g. everyone below 4/6 on Section F).
• Give children with support needs counters during Sections A–D and note it on the paper.

Teacher Tips

The most common mistake is adding instead of multiplying: children write 3 × 4 = 7. Do not correct it with a rule — ask "Show me 3 groups of 4 with counters," and make children say the whole sentence: "3 groups of 4 is 12. 3 times 4 equals 12." Some textbooks in Asia read 3 × 4 the other way ("4, three times"); because of turn-around facts the answer is the same, so choose one way for your class and accept both in children's work.
