About This Resource

A one-page mingling speaking activity where students walk around the classroom asking "Do you like...?" and collecting classmates' names, then report back what they learned using a sentence frame.

Overview

This activity gets students out of their seats and using the topic's target question in real, unscripted exchanges with multiple classmates rather than a single scripted partner. Eight boxes each name one food or drink; students move around the room asking "Do you like (word)?" and write a classmate's name in the box when the answer is "Yes, I do." A Report Back section gives two sentence frames ("___ likes ___.") so students share what they found out with the class, turning individual interviews into a short piece of public speaking. An Extra Challenge section pushes stronger students to ask a genuine follow-up question.

Grade 2 45-55 Minutes Speaking

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to ask "Do you like...?" to multiple classmates in a real conversational setting.
Students will be able to answer "Yes, I do." or "No, I don't." accurately and quickly.
Students will be able to report a classmate's preference to the class using "___ likes ___."

How to Use This Resource

Hand out one copy per student. Model the activity first with one confident student in front of the class: ask them "Do you like rice?" and show how you would write their name if they answer "Yes, I do." Set a time limit (5–8 minutes works well for a class of 20–30) and remind students they may not ask the same classmate twice in a row, so they have to keep moving. Afterward, ask two or three students to use the Report Back sentence frame to share what they learned.

Classroom Activity Ideas

Turn the Report Back stage into a quick class poll: as students share their findings, keep a tally on the board of how many classmates like each food or drink. Total the tallies at the end and ask "Which food does our class like best?" — a natural, low-prep extension that also introduces basic counting and comparison language.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Pair a hesitant student with a more confident partner for the first two or three questions before releasing them to mingle independently. Reduce the grid to 4 boxes instead of 8 if needed.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all 8 boxes independently within the time limit.
CHALLENGE: Complete the Extra Challenge section, asking a follow-up question and reporting back what their classmate said in more detail.

Assessment

Use the My Favorite Foods and Drinks Grading Rubric while circulating during the mingling stage, focusing especially on the Communication & Participation and Expressing Likes and Dislikes criteria. Collected handouts also work as a simple completion check — a student with 6–8 names has clearly been asking the question repeatedly.

Teacher Tips

Set a visible timer and announce a "halfway" check-in ("You should have at least 4 names by now!") to keep the mingling energetic and on task. Grade 2 classes tend to lose focus in open-ended mingling activities without a light structure like this to keep the pace up.
