Grade 2 Subtraction With Regrouping Grading Rubric
About This Resource
A one-page grading rubric for assessing Grade 2 student work on subtraction with regrouping, covering understanding of regrouping, computational accuracy, use of place value vocabulary, and word problem solving across four performance levels.
Overview
This rubric gives teachers a consistent way to score student work from across the Subtraction With Regrouping collection — the Practice Worksheet, Word Problems Worksheet, Base-10 Block Hands-On Activity, and Quiz can all be assessed against the same four criteria. Each criterion is described at four levels (Needs Support, Developing, Meets Expectations, and Exceeds Expectations) in plain, observable language, so two teachers scoring the same piece of work should reach similar conclusions.

How to Use This Resource
- Apply this rubric once you have a piece of student work that reflects regrouping — most naturally the Quiz, but it can also be used with the Practice Worksheet, Word Problems Worksheet, or observed performance during the Base-10 Block Hands-On Activity. Read across each row to find the description that best matches what the student's work shows, rather than assuming a single wrong answer drops a student to the lowest level — look at the overall pattern of understanding. The four criteria can be scored together for an overall picture, or individually if you want to track a specific skill, such as vocabulary use, separately from computational accuracy.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Share an anonymised example of work at each performance level with the class (with the original student's permission, or using a teacher-made example) and discuss as a group what makes it fit that level. This helps students understand what strong work looks like before their own is assessed.
Teacher Tips
Score a small sample of student work against all four criteria before scoring the whole class, so you can calibrate what "Meets Expectations" looks like in your own students' handwriting and explanations before making judgment calls on borderline cases.
