Grade 4 Jobs and Community Helpers Lesson Plan
About This Resource
A complete 40-45 minute lesson plan that teaches 12 jobs and community helpers alongside the question pattern "What does a ___ do?" through a miming warm-up, guided flashcard practice, independent worksheet time, and a "mystery helper" guessing speaking activity.
Overview
This lesson plan walks a teacher through one full class period on jobs and community helpers. It opens with a physical warm-up (Guess My Job) to activate attention and any vocabulary students already know, then presents 12 jobs using the Vocabulary PowerPoint, moves into guided flashcard practice built around "What does a ___ do?" and "Where does a ___ work?", gives students independent worksheet time, and finishes with a Production stage where pairs describe a job without naming it while their partner guesses. A Teacher Notes section explains how to split the lesson across two shorter periods and invites teachers to swap in a more locally familiar community helper if one of the twelve doesn't fit their context.

Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to name 12 jobs and community helpers.
- Students will be able to ask and answer "What does a (job) do?"
- Students will be able to describe where a community helper works using "A (job) works at/in/on a (place)."
- Students will be able to match a job to its action and its workplace.
Lesson Procedure
- Read through the full sequence before class and gather the materials listed (PowerPoint, Flashcards, one worksheet per student, and the Speaking Activity handout). Follow the timed stages in order: Warm-Up, Presentation, Guided Practice, Independent Practice, Production, and Wrap-Up. Each stage includes the exact language to model for students, not just a general description, so a teacher who is less confident with classroom English can follow it closely. Adjust timing to fit your own class length; the Teacher Notes section gives a ready-made two-day split.
Assessment
Use the Jobs and Community Helpers Quiz as a short formal check either at the end of this lesson or the start of the next one. To assess the Speaking Activity itself, use the Jobs and Community Helpers Grading Rubric while circulating during Production, or collect the Speaking Activity handouts afterward as a quick completion check.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Keep a word bank with pictures visible on the board throughout the lesson. Let students point to flashcards instead of speaking at first, and accept single-word answers ("teacher") before requiring the full sentence.
ON-LEVEL: Students use the full question-and-answer pattern for both actions and workplaces independently during guided and independent practice.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to add a reason to their sentence ("A firefighter puts out fires because fires are dangerous") or to name a second thing the job involves during the Speaking Activity.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Turn the Wrap-Up round into a quick "who am I" chant: show a job picture and have the whole class respond together in a full sentence. Repeat with two or three different pictures so students hear the pattern several more times before the lesson ends.
Teacher Tips
During the Guess My Job warm-up, exaggerate your actions more than you think you need to — a big stirring motion for chef, an emphatic steering motion for driver. Students copy the teacher's energy level, and a flat demonstration tends to produce a flat, half-hearted class response.
