Grade 5 Free Time and Hobbies Grading Rubric

About This Resource

A five-criteria rubric for scoring how well students talk or write about their hobbies and free-time habits, covering vocabulary, sentence structure, and communication.

Overview

This rubric gives teachers a consistent way to score student performance on the Free Time and Hobbies topic, whether that's during the Speaking Activity, while marking a completed worksheet, or during a short oral check-in. It scores five criteria — Vocabulary Use, Sentence Structure, Talking About Preferences and Frequency, Communication & Participation, and Effort & Completion — each on a 1–3 scale with a clear description of what each level looks like. A scoring summary table and guidance on interpreting the results for this specific topic are included, so the rubric can be used consistently across a whole class or across multiple lessons.

How to Use This Resource

  • Print one copy per student, or keep a class set and record scores on a separate tracking sheet. Use it during the partner-interview Speaking Activity for the most complete picture, focusing especially on Communication & Participation and Talking About Preferences and Frequency. When marking written work only, rely mainly on Vocabulary Use and Sentence Structure, since participation is harder to judge from paper alone.

Teacher Tips

Use this rubric a second time later in the term with a different topic's vocabulary swapped in for Vocabulary Use — the other four criteria (Sentence Structure, Communication & Participation, Effort & Completion, and a general "expressing yourself clearly" criterion) transfer well to almost any speaking task, which makes it easy to track a student's general progress over time, not just their progress on this one topic.
