Grade 5 Free Time and Hobbies Quiz
About This Resource
A four-section quiz that checks hobby vocabulary and the like/enjoy/love + -ing grammar pattern, with picture matching, sentence choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short writing.
Overview
This quiz moves from picture recognition to independent writing, giving a fuller picture of what students have learned than any single worksheet. Section A checks vocabulary recognition through picture matching. Section B checks that students can identify a correctly formed like/enjoy/love + -ing sentence, catching the common error of leaving the verb in its base form. Section C is a focused fill-in-the-blank that tests whether students can produce the -ing form themselves, including for the two-word phrase "watching movies." Section D asks students to write two original sentences about their own free time using both target patterns from the topic, checking whether they can produce the language independently rather than just recognise or select it.

Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify hobby and free-time vocabulary from pictures.
- Students will be able to select the correctly formed like/enjoy/love + -ing sentence for a picture.
- Students will be able to produce the -ing form of a verb to complete a sentence.
- Students will be able to write two original sentences describing their own free-time habits.
How to Use This Resource
- Use at the end of the Free Time and Hobbies Lesson Plan, or as a short formal check at the start of the following lesson once students have had time to practise with the Vocabulary Worksheet, Grammar Worksheet, and Speaking Activity. Administer individually under quiet conditions for the most accurate picture of what each student has learned. Section D can be marked more leniently than Sections A–C, since it asks for original language rather than a single correct answer.
Classroom Activity Ideas
- Before handing out the quiz, do a 2-minute oral warm-up: say a base verb (swim, dance, cook) and have the whole class respond chorally with its -ing form. This primes Section C's skill without giving away any of the quiz's actual answers.
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Allow students to complete Sections A and B only, or provide a word bank of -ing forms on the board for Section C. Read Section D's instructions aloud if reading independently is a barrier.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four sections independently within a normal class period.
CHALLENGE: In Section D, ask students to write three or four sentences instead of two, including at least one sentence comparing two different hobbies.
Assessment
Mark Sections A–C against the answer key for an objective score, and assess Section D more holistically using the criteria in the Free Time and Hobbies Grading Rubric if you want a documented score for writing.
Teacher Tips
Section C is the best diagnostic on this quiz — a student who does well on Sections A and B but struggles with Section C usually recognises the correct pattern when they see it but hasn't yet internalised producing the -ing form on their own. That's a clear signal to revisit the Grammar Worksheet's Grammar Reminder box with them individually.
