Grade 5 Free Time and Hobbies Vocabulary PowerPoint

About This Resource

A 10-slide presentation that introduces 12 hobby and free-time words with clear pictures, then teaches students how to talk about their preferences and how often they do each activity.

Overview

This presentation is built to be taught, not just shown. It opens with a title slide and clear learning objectives, then presents all 12 hobby words across two vocabulary slides with a picture and label for each. From there it moves into the target language — "What do you like doing in your free time?" and "How often do you ___?" — with a teacher-modelled dialogue slide, a guided practice slide with sentence frames for pair work, a preview of the Speaking Activity, and a picture-only review slide that has students produce the vocabulary without a text prompt. It closes with an encouraging final slide.

Grade 5 45-50 Minutes Vocabulary Free Time and Hobbies

Lesson Sequence

  • Present as a whole-class lesson using a projector or screen. Say each vocabulary word clearly and have students repeat it as a class, then in smaller groups. On the Key Language slide, model both question-and-answer patterns yourself before asking students to try them. Slides 6 and 7 work well for choral repetition and pair practice respectively; Slide 8 previews the printed Speaking Activity, so it's a natural bridge into that handout. The final review slide (9) works well as a quick formative check before moving on.

Classroom Activities

  • After Slide 7 (Guided Practice), extend it into a "Find Someone Who" mingling activity: students walk around asking classmates "Do you like ___?" for different hobbies and write down the first classmate who says yes for each one. It gets students moving and multiplies the speaking practice well beyond a single seated pair.

Teacher Tips

On Slide 9 ("What's My Hobby?"), resist naming the hobby yourself even if students hesitate — give a longer pause than feels comfortable. Grade 5 students often know the word but need a moment to retrieve it under mild pressure, and that retrieval practice is more valuable than a fast answer.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to name 12 free-time activities and hobbies in English.
  • Students will be able to ask "What do you like doing in your free time?" and answer with like/enjoy/love + -ing.
  • Students will be able to ask "How often do you (activity)?" and answer using a frequency adverb.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Slow down on the two vocabulary slides and allow extra choral repetition rounds. Let students answer with a single word before requiring the full sentence pattern.
ON-LEVEL: Students follow the full slide sequence, participating in both the teacher-modelled dialogue and the guided practice pair work.
CHALLENGE: During Guided Practice, ask early finishers to add a reason to their answer, such as "I like swimming because it's relaxing."

Assessment

Use Slide 9 as an informal spot-check of vocabulary recall. For a more formal check, follow up with the Free Time and Hobbies Quiz.
