Grade 5 Travel and Transportation Vocabulary PowerPoint
About This Resource
A 16-slide vocabulary presentation that teaches 12 words for vehicles and travel places to Grade 5 English learners. Each word gets its own clear slide with an original icon, an example sentence, and a simple teaching cue, plus a practice slide and a vehicle-guessing review game to close the lesson.
Overview
This PowerPoint is the visual backbone of the Travel and Transportation topic. It opens with a bright title slide and a kid-friendly "Today I Can..." objectives slide, then presents all 12 target words (bus, car, motorbike, bicycle, tuk-tuk, taxi, train, boat, plane, bus stop, train station, airport) one at a time, each tagged with a category (Road Vehicle, Rail/Water/Air, or Travel Place) so students build a mental map of how people get around. A "Let's Practise!" slide models the question "How do you get to school?" with the answer "I go by bus," and a "Guess the Vehicle!" review game slide gives the class an active way to review before moving on to independent work. Every slide uses the same original icon set so students quickly learn to associate each picture with its word.

Lesson Sequence
- Project the PowerPoint at the start of the lesson, right after your warm-up (see the companion Travel and Transportation Lesson Plan). Move through the slides in order: title, objectives, then each vocabulary slide in turn. For every vocabulary slide, say the word, point to the icon, and have students repeat the word and the example sentence before advancing. Use the practice slide to model the target question-and-answer pattern before students move into pair work, and close with the "Guess the Vehicle!" review game for a fast, active recap.
Classroom Activities
- Before starting the review game slide, prepare a few extra sets of clues so more than one flashcard can be guessed per round. Play the game for four or five rounds, and finish by asking a volunteer to be the clue-giver for one extra round.
Teacher Tips
Do not rush through the slides. Pause on each vocabulary slide long enough for every student to say the word and the example sentence at least once, even if that means splitting the presentation across two short sessions - comprehension for new vocabulary matters far more than finishing all 16 slides in one sitting.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to identify 12 vehicles and travel places from picture cues.
- Students will be able to pronounce each word clearly after modelling.
- Students will be able to ask "How do you get to ___?"
- Students will be able to answer with "I go by ___" or "I walk."
Differentiation
SUPPORT: Slow down the pace on the vocabulary slides for English learners who need more repetition, and keep returning to the icon as the anchor for meaning rather than relying on the English word alone.
ON-LEVEL: Students follow the presentation as designed, saying each word and sentence and completing the practice slide with the standard sentence frame.
CHALLENGE: Ask advanced students to add their own example sentence for each vocabulary slide instead of repeating the one shown, using a different person or place.
Assessment
Watch and listen during choral repetition to see which words students say confidently and which need more modelling. The practice slide gives an informal spoken check of the target question pattern before students attempt it independently in the Speaking Activity.
