Grade 5 Travel and Transportation Grammar Worksheet: How Do You Get To...?

Student Task

• Use this worksheet after students are comfortable with the Travel and Transportation vocabulary (from the Vocabulary PowerPoint, Flashcards, and Vocabulary Worksheet), since it assumes students already know the vehicle and travel-place words and are now ready to focus on sentence grammar. Review the rule reminder at the top of the page together before students begin. Activities 1 and 2 work well as guided or independent practice; Activity 3 is a good check of whether students can build a full, correctly ordered sentence rather than just filling a blank; Activity 4 combines grammar with reading comprehension and works well as a closing task. Keep the Grammar Reminder box visible as an anchor chart idea for your classroom wall.

Classroom Use

• Play a quick "By or On?" drill before the written work: say a way of travelling out loud (bus, foot, bicycle, train) and have students call out "by" or "on" as fast as they can. This builds automaticity with the choice before students have to apply it in writing.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Let students act out or point to a picture of each vehicle before choosing "by" or "on," as a concrete strategy for applying the rule. Reduce Activity 2 to four items if six feels like too much.
ON-LEVEL: Students complete all four activities independently in one sitting.
CHALLENGE: Ask students to write two extra sentences of their own for Activity 3's pattern, one using "by" and one using "walk" or "on foot."

Answer Key & Assessment

Use the completed worksheet as a direct check of the "How do you get to...?" pattern and the "by" rule, and mark it against the included answer key. Watch for the specific error pattern of saying "by foot" instead of "on foot" or "I walk," which is common with English learners and worth a quick small-group review if several students make it.

Learning Objectives

• Students will be able to choose "by" or "on" correctly depending on whether a sentence describes a vehicle or walking.
• Students will be able to write the correct form of "do" or "does" in "How ___ you get to ___?" questions.
• Students will be able to reorder scrambled words into a correct sentence or question about travel.
• Students will be able to read a short passage about how classmates travel and answer true/false comprehension questions correctly.

Teacher Tips

When a student makes a wrong choice in Activity 1, ask them whether the word after the blank names a vehicle or describes walking. Grade 5 English learners often work out the "by" versus "on foot" distinction quickly once they focus on that one question, even before they can state the grammar rule in full.
