Grade 7 ESL Review Quiz: Places and Directions

About This Resource

A 15-question independent review quiz covering the whole topic: multiple choice on places and prepositions of place, fill-in-the-blank on direction phrases, and true/false map-reading questions based on the shared town map. Designed as a closed-book knowledge check after the topic's three teaching sessions.

Overview

Part A (5 questions) checks vocabulary and preposition knowledge through multiple choice. Part B (5 questions) checks recall of direction phrases through fill-in-the-blank items supported by a word bank. Part C (5 questions) gives students the fully labelled town map and asks them to judge true/false statements about where places are in relation to each other, testing whether students can apply prepositions of place to a real map rather than only complete a sentence in isolation.

Grade 7 35-45 Minutes Quiz Places and Directions

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to identify places and their functions from short definitions.
  • Students will be able to select the correct preposition of place for a given spatial relationship.
  • Students will be able to recall and correctly use direction-giving phrases.
  • Students will be able to judge the accuracy of statements about a map using prepositions of place.

How to Use This Resource

  • Use at the end of Session 3, after the writing activity, as a quick independent, closed-book check of what students have retained across the topic. Allow about 10 minutes. Mark using the included answer key, or use it as a self-check activity with students swapping papers and marking a partner's quiz under your guidance.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • After marking, turn any statement students got wrong into a quick whole-class discussion: ask a student to explain, using the map, why the correct answer is true or false — this often clears up a lingering misunderstanding faster than simply announcing the right answer.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow extra time; read questions aloud for students who need support with written English; reduce Part C to three statements instead of five.
ON-LEVEL: Complete the quiz independently within the allotted time.
CHALLENGE: After finishing, ask the student to write one additional true statement and one additional false statement about the map, in the same style as Part C, and explain why each is true or false.

Teacher Tips

Read Part C's instructions aloud before students begin — some students rush past "Look at the map below" and try to answer from memory, which defeats the purpose of this section as a map-reading check rather than a memory test.
