About This Resource

A teacher assessment tool for scoring student advice-giving on the Health and Healthy Habits topic. It scores four criteria — use of should/shouldn't, health vocabulary, content and relevance of advice, and communication/organization — on a 1-4 scale, and works for either the Healthy Habits Writing Activity or the Health Advice Role-Play speaking task.

Overview

The rubric gives teachers a consistent way to score student advice-giving without writing new criteria for every class. Each of the four criteria has a full descriptor at all four performance levels (Exceeds Expectations, Meets Expectations, Developing, Needs Support), so scoring is quick and defensible, and the total score out of 16 gives an at-a-glance sense of how ready a class is to move on.

How to Use This Resource

Print or project the rubric while listening to a pair's role-play, or while marking a stack of completed Writing Activity letters. Score each of the four criteria by circling or highlighting the matching descriptor, then add the four scores for a total out of 16. Use the score-interpretation guide to decide whether a class is ready to move on or needs more guided practice.

Teacher Tips

Keep a copy of two or three strong, anonymized student responses each time you teach this topic — real examples from your own classroom are usually more motivating for students than a generic printed sample.
