Health and Healthy Habits Review Quiz

About This Resource

A three-page, 20-mark review quiz for Grade 8 ESL covering vocabulary matching, should/shouldn't grammar, a short reading passage with comprehension questions, and a brief writing task, suitable as an end-of-topic check for Health and Healthy Habits.

Overview

The quiz is organized into four sections: vocabulary matching (5 marks), should/shouldn't sentence completion (5 marks), a short original reading passage with three comprehension questions (6 marks), and a short writing task asking students to give a classmate two pieces of advice (4 marks). Together the sections check whether students can recognize, manipulate, and independently produce the vocabulary and grammar taught across this topic's other resources.

Grade 8 45-55 Minutes Quiz Health and Healthy Habits

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to match health vocabulary to its correct meaning.
  • Students will be able to complete sentences accurately using should/shouldn't and a base verb.
  • Students will be able to answer comprehension questions about a short original reading passage.
  • Students will be able to independently write advice using should/shouldn't in response to a described situation.

How to Use This Resource

  • Administer the quiz after completing the topic's vocabulary, grammar, reading, speaking, and writing resources, either as a formal graded assessment or as an informal progress check. Marks are indicated for each section so students can pace themselves. Allow roughly 30-35 minutes for most classes to complete all four sections.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • After returning marked quizzes, do a quick class review of Section D by collecting a few different (anonymized) pieces of advice for the same scenario and discussing as a class which ones would be most convincing and why.

Differentiation

Support: Allow students to use their Healthy Habits Vocabulary Worksheet word bank as a reference during Section A, and reduce Section D to one required sentence instead of two.
On-Level: Students complete all four sections independently within the standard time.
Challenge: Ask students who finish early to add a reason with "because" to their Section D advice, or to write one additional true/false-style comprehension question about the Section C passage for a partner to answer

Assessment

This resource is itself a summative assessment for the topic. Use the total score out of 20 and the score bands in the answer key to identify students or areas that may need re-teaching before moving to a new topic.

Teacher Tips

Read the mini reading passage in Section C aloud once before students begin that section, even though the quiz is meant to be completed independently — for many EFL learners, hearing the text once removes a decoding barrier that isn't the actual skill being tested.
