Numbers — Grammar Worksheet

About This Resource

A three-part worksheet practicing "There are ___." number words, singular vs. plural naming words ("one star" / "two stars"), and there is/there are subject-verb agreement, plus a full answer key.

Overview

Part A has students complete six "There are ___." sentences from a counted picture. Part B practices the singular/plural rule that trips up many learners — adding -s to the naming word once there is more than one — using four picture-supported fill-ins. Part C introduces there is/there are agreement by showing one picture ("There is one balloon.") versus several ("There are five balloons."), giving a simple, visual way to see why the verb changes.

Grade 1 45-55 Minutes Numbers Grammar

Student Task

  • Complete Part A together as a class first to model the sentence pattern.
  • Have students complete Part B independently, reminding them to add -s only when there is more than one.
  • Introduce Part C by asking "Is it one, or more than one?" before students choose is or are.
  • Grade using the included answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Play a quick "one or many?" game: hold up either one or several of the same object and have students call out "There is one" or "There are many" as a whole-class response before moving to individual practice.

Differentiation

Support: complete Parts A and B only for a first pass, saving Part C's is/are distinction for a separate, shorter lesson.

Extension: have students write one original "There are ___" sentence of their own beside Part B, counting a real object in the classroom.

Answer Key & Assessment

Grade using the included answer key; use Part C results specifically to see whether students are ready to move on to more complex sentence patterns in later units.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to complete "There are ___." sentences using the correct number word.
  • Students will be able to use correct singular and plural naming words for counted objects.
  • Students will be able to choose is or are correctly based on whether one or more than one object is shown.

Teacher Tips

For Part C, physically hold up one object and say "There is..." then hold up several of the same object and say "There are..." before students open their worksheet — a live visual model makes the is/are rule click much faster than the worksheet alone.
