Grade 9 Then and Now Worksheet: Used To Grammar Practice

About This Resource

A 2-page grammar worksheet that teaches "used to" and "didn't use to" for describing how identity changes over time, then has students apply the grammar to their own lives — with an answer key.

Overview

This worksheet moves the unit's identity theme into a specific grammar structure. Students first complete sentences with "used to" or "didn't use to," then get extra practice circling the correctly written form. Part B is a guided table where students compare their own past and present selves, Part C has them correct four common mistakes with the structure, and a Challenge asks for original sentences about their own life.

Student Task

  • Use this worksheet after students are comfortable with the trait vocabulary, as a bridge into the Reading, Writing, and Speaking activities later in the unit. Model one sentence about yourself on the board before releasing students to Part A.

Classroom Use

  • Then and Now Mingle: students walk around asking classmates "What did you used to do that you don't do now?" and record two or three answers before returning to their seats.

Differentiation

Support: Provide a sentence frame card with "used to" already filled in for one example, and allow students to complete Part B with a partner rather than fully independently.
On-Level: Students complete Parts A-C independently, and write the Challenge sentences on their own.
Challenge: Ask students to extend the Challenge with two more sentences comparing a friend's past and present self, using "used to."

Answer Key & Assessment

Score Parts A and C against the answer key as a quick grammar check. Part B and the Challenge are best assessed with the Grade 9 Personal Identity Unit Grading Rubric, since both are open-ended.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to use "used to" and "didn't use to" correctly to describe past habits and states.
  • Students will be able to identify and correct common mistakes with the "used to" structure.
  • Students will be able to compare their own past and present selves using the present simple and "used to."

Teacher Tips

Write one full example sentence about yourself on the board ("I used to be shy, but now I am confident.") before starting Part A — a real teacher example makes the grammar concrete immediately.
