Once Upon a Page: Writing a Short Story

About This Resource

A complete Grade 9 ESL writing lesson pack on writing a short story: the elements of character, setting, conflict and point of view, the five stages of plot from exposition to resolution, hooking readers with a strong opening, showing instead of telling, punctuating dialogue correctly, and planning an original story with a clear conflict and satisfying ending. Includes slides, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn how short stories work and then plan their own. They study the key elements (a believable character, a vivid setting, a conflict that drives the action and a consistent point of view) and the five stages of a plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. They analyze a model story, practice turning flat "telling" sentences into vivid "showing" sentences, punctuate dialogue, and write openings that hook the reader. The lesson ends with a complete story plan, which students develop into a finished story for homework.

Grade 9 (ages 14–15) 55 minutes Creative writing story structure descriptive language dialogue planning

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the elements of a short story and the five stages of a plot.
  • Use techniques such as a strong hook, showing not telling and correctly punctuated dialogue.
  • Plan and write an original short story with a clear conflict and resolution.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: two story openings, one flat and one gripping. Ask, "Which story would you keep reading? Why?"
  • Teach the story elements, plot stages and techniques with the slides, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 6, then use the quiz to check and write their story for homework. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Story dice: roll dice or draw cards for a character, a setting and a problem, then plan a story in five minutes.
  • Freeze frame: groups act out the climax of a well-known story as a still image while the class describes what is shown.
  • Opening line gallery: students write their best first sentence on a sticky note and the class votes on the most gripping hooks.

Differentiation

Support: give a story map template with sentence starters and a bank of showing phrases. Challenge: write the story from two different points of view, or add a twist that changes how the reader understands the beginning.

Assessment

Worksheet activities 1 to 5 and the quiz check story elements, plot stages and techniques (answer key included). The story plan in activity 6 and the homework story are assessed with the rubric.

Teacher Tips

The most common weakness in student stories is a missing or weak conflict. Before students start writing, ask each one to complete the sentence "My character wants... but...". If they cannot, the story is not ready.
