Protecting Our Planet: Grade 9 Environment and Sustainability PowerPoint

About This Resource

An 11-slide teaching presentation for Grade 9 ESL classes that introduces environment vocabulary and the language of giving opinions, agreeing, disagreeing, and persuading, then walks students through guided practice, a speaking debate, and a persuasive writing task.

Overview

This slide deck is designed to be taught directly, following the sequence of the topic's Lesson Plan. It opens with learning objectives and a warm-up discussion prompt, then presents eight environment vocabulary words across two visually organized slides (Waste and Energy; Nature and Climate). A Language Focus slide sets out the four categories of opinion language (opinion, agree, disagree, persuade) with example phrases, followed by a "Make It Persuasive" slide that models turning a blunt statement into a persuasive one. The deck then moves into guided class practice, instructions for the speaking debate activity, a bridge into the persuasive writing task, and a two-part exit ticket to close the lesson.

Grade 9 45-55 Minutes Vocabulary Protecting Our Planet

Lesson Sequence

  • Students will be able to identify and use eight environment vocabulary words.
  • Students will be able to recognise language for giving an opinion, agreeing, disagreeing, and persuading.
  • Students will be able to convert a blunt statement into a more persuasive one.
  • Students will be able to complete a guided opinion sentence as a class.

Classroom Activities

  • After the Vocabulary slides, do a quick "stand if it's true" check: read out a definition and have students stand only if they believe it matches word A rather than word B (for example, "stand if this describes recycling, not renewable energy"). It's a fast way to catch confusion between similar-sounding vocabulary before moving into the speaking and writing tasks.

Teacher Tips

On the "Make It Persuasive" slide, cover the strong (green) version of each example first and ask students to suggest their own persuasive rewrite before revealing the model — it gets far more active thinking out of the class than reading the model straight away.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Keep the vocabulary slides visible throughout the Guided Practice and Speaking Activity stages so students can refer back to definitions and example phrases as needed.
ON-LEVEL: Follow the deck's sequence as designed, moving from vocabulary to language focus to guided and independent practice.
CHALLENGE: During the Make It Persuasive slide, ask stronger students to add a second reason to each persuasive rewrite rather than stopping at one.

Assessment

Use the Exit Ticket slide as a quick end-of-lesson check — collect students' new vocabulary word and opinion sentence on paper to see who has grasped the target language and who needs more support before the next lesson.
