About This Resource

A board game for small groups where Grade 2 students must correctly solve a subtraction-with-regrouping problem before rolling the die and moving toward FINISH, turning review practice into a game rather than a repeat worksheet.

Overview

Players take turns drawing a problem card, solving it on scratch paper, and checking their answer against the answer key before earning a roll of the die. Landing on a BONUS or OOPS square adds a small extra element of chance on top of the math, keeping the game lively without taking the focus off solving correctly. All 20 problem cards require regrouping, giving students focused, repeated practice of exactly the skill this collection is building, in a format that feels different from a written worksheet.

Use this game as a review lesson before the Quiz, once students have already practised the written method independently. Groups of 2 to 4 players need one board, one die, one marker per player, and a set of cut-out cards, so plan photocopying accordingly if running several games at once. Explain the rule that an incorrect answer means staying in place rather than losing a turn entirely — this keeps struggling students engaged rather than falling permanently behind in the game.

Variations

Fastest Fingers Round: after playing the full game once, run a quick whole-class round where you read a card aloud and the first student to correctly call out the answer earns a point for their table group — a fast-paced way to close the lesson.

Teacher Tips

Assign one confident reader per group to hold the answer key and check answers, rotating this role partway through so more than one student gets practice reading and verifying answers rather than only playing.

Differentiation

ON-LEVEL: Play the game independently within groups, solving each card without additional support.
CHALLENGE: After the game, challenge students to create one new problem card of their own that would fit on the board, and solve it to confirm it works.

Assessment

Teacher observation of groups during play, including how consistently students solve problems correctly before rolling, and informal listening for correct use of vocabulary such as "regroup" and "trade" during group discussion.
