Sharing and Grouping: Dividing Unit Fractions and Whole Numbers

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 math lesson pack on dividing unit fractions and whole numbers: sharing a unit fraction among a whole number of people (1/3 ÷ 4), finding how many unit fractions fit in a whole number (4 ÷ 1/3), using fraction strips, area models and number lines, checking with multiplication and solving real-world sharing and grouping problems. Includes slides with worked examples, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn two kinds of fraction division through pictures before rules. In sharing problems such as 1/2 ÷ 3, a unit fraction is split into equal parts, so each share is smaller (1/6). In grouping problems such as 3 ÷ 1/4, students count how many unit fractions fit into a whole number, so the answer is larger (12). They model both with fraction strips, area models and number lines, check every answer with multiplication (1/6 × 3 = 1/2, 12 × 1/4 = 3), choose the correct model for word problems about pizza, ribbon and juice, and write their own story problems.

Grade 5 (ages 10–11) 60 minutes Fractions division modeling reasoning problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Divide a unit fraction by a whole number and a whole number by a unit fraction using models.
  • Explain why dividing a unit fraction by a whole number gives a smaller answer and dividing a whole number by a unit fraction gives a larger answer.
  • Check division with multiplication and solve real-world problems involving fraction division.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: half a pizza shared by 3 friends. Ask how much each friend gets and draw it.
  • Teach sharing (unit fraction ÷ whole number) and grouping (whole number ÷ unit fraction) with the slides, letting students try each worked example on whiteboards first.
  • Students complete the worksheet, then use the quiz to check and the homework for practice. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Paper folding: fold a strip into halves, then share one half among 3 students by folding again; unfold to see sixths.
  • Ribbon cutting: cut a 3 m ribbon into 1/2 m pieces and count them to model 3 ÷ 1/2 = 6.
  • Write a story: students write a sharing story and a grouping story, swap with a partner and solve with a drawing.

Differentiation

Support: give fraction strips and pre-drawn area models, and start with halves and quarters only. Challenge: solve problems with fifths, sixths and eighths, explain the pattern without drawing, and write a word problem for 1/4 ÷ 5 and for 5 ÷ 1/4.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check calculating, modeling and problem solving (answer key included). The explanation questions and rubric assess reasoning about why answers get smaller or larger.

Teacher Tips

Ask two different questions for the two problem types. For 1/2 ÷ 3 ask "How much does each person get?" For 3 ÷ 1/2 ask "How many halves fit in 3?" Students who can say the question out loud almost always draw the correct model.
