Simple Circuits: Build, Test and Explain Electricity

About This Resource

A Grade 4 science lesson on simple electric circuits: batteries, bulbs, switches, conductors and insulators. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that electricity needs a complete loop, called a circuit, to flow from a battery through a bulb and back. They name the parts of a circuit, explain what a switch does, and sort materials into conductors and insulators. The lesson links a hands-on circuit demonstration to worksheet practice.

Grade 4 45 minutes Scientific vocabulary sequencing classifying materials explaining cause and effect

Learning Objectives

  • Name the parts of a simple circuit: battery, wire, bulb and switch.
  • Explain that a bulb lights only when the circuit is a complete loop.
  • Sort everyday materials into conductors and insulators.

Lesson Procedure

  • Print one worksheet per student and keep the answer key.
  • Teach the vocabulary and show a simple circuit using the lesson plan.
  • Do activities 1 and 2 together, then let students finish the rest.
  • Use the quiz as a check and send the homework home.

Assessment

Activities 1 to 5 check vocabulary and ideas. The quiz checks the circuit loop and materials. The rubric covers four skills.

Differentiation

Support: give students a labelled picture of a circuit and the vocabulary list. Challenge: ask students to design a circuit with a switch and explain how it works.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Build a circuit with a battery, two wires and a small bulb, and make it light.
  • Test classroom objects such as a coin, a pencil eraser and a paper clip as conductors or insulators.
  • Draw a circuit diagram and trace the path of the electricity with a finger.

Teacher Tips

Use only batteries for every demonstration. Remind students never to touch wall outlets or plugs. A battery, a bulb holder and two wires are enough for each pair.
