Unit 2 Reading Comprehension Activity — My School Week

Learning Objectives

• Scan a timetable accurately to answer at least 5 of 6 true/false statements.
• Answer at least 4 of 5 short-answer questions correctly, using either the timetable or the passage as appropriate.
• Identify a writer's stated opinion of a subject and the reason given, for at least 2 of 3 subjects mentioned in the passage.

How to Use This Resource

• Use during Lesson 3 of the unit (see the Lesson Plan, Resource 11). Have students study the timetable and read the passage first, then complete Parts A–C, reviewing answers as a class before moving to the Writing Activity (Resource 6).

Classroom Activity Ideas

• After reviewing Part C, ask students to write one sentence giving their own opinion of one subject from the passage, using "because" — a quick bridge activity that previews the reasoning language used in the Writing Activity's opinion paragraph (Resource 6, Task 2).

Differentiation

Support: Allow Support students to complete Part B's short-answer questions orally with the teacher instead of in writing, and permit them to underline the relevant timetable cell or passage sentence before answering.

On-Level: Complete all three parts independently after reading the timetable and passage once.

Challenge: Challenge students write one additional true/false statement of their own about the passage or timetable and exchange it with a partner to answer.

Assessment

Score Parts A, B, and C against the answer key (14 items total: 6 + 5 + 3). Part C's "Reason" column allows reasonable paraphrase rather than requiring exact wording from the passage.

Teacher Tips

Before students begin Part B, point out that some short-answer questions require the timetable and others require the passage — have students briefly label each question "T" or "P" in the margin before answering, which noticeably reduces the most common error of searching the wrong source for an answer.
