Yesterday I Played! Past Simple Regular Verbs

About This Resource

A complete Grade 3 ESL lesson pack on the past simple with regular verbs: adding -ed, the spelling rules for verbs ending in e, y and a short vowel, time words such as yesterday and last week, negatives with didn't, and writing about last weekend. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn to talk about finished actions in the past with regular verbs. They add -ed to most verbs (play → played), add only -d when a verb ends in e (dance → danced), change y to i (cry → cried) and double the last letter after a short vowel (stop → stopped). They use time words such as yesterday and last week, make negatives with didn't, read a short diary entry and write about their own weekend.

Grade 3 ESL (ages 8–9), A1–A2 50 minutes Grammar spelling reading writing speaking

Learning Objectives

  • Form the past simple of regular verbs using the -ed spelling rules.
  • Use time words such as yesterday, last week and ago.
  • Write affirmative and negative sentences about the past.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and tell a short story about what you did yesterday.
  • Use the flashcards to practise base and past forms, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the weekend diary homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Yesterday mime: a child mimes an action and the class guesses in the past (You cooked!).
  • Spelling rule sort: children sort verb cards into four piles: add -ed, add -d, y to -ied and double the letter.
  • Find someone who: "Did you watch TV yesterday?" Children collect names on a grid.

Differentiation

Support: focus on verbs that just add -ed and use picture cards. Challenge: write a five-sentence diary entry with at least one negative and one time word.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check past forms and spelling (answer keys included). Use the rubric for the weekend diary.

Teacher Tips

Point out that the -ed ending can sound like /t/ (walked), /d/ (played) or /id/ (wanted). Practise saying them aloud so children do not add an extra syllable to every verb.
