A Day I'll Never Forget: Writing a Narrative Paragraph

About This Resource

A complete Grade 5 ESL writing pack on narrative paragraphs: topic sentences, events in time order, time words, details and feelings, past tense verbs and concluding sentences, ending with a planned and written paragraph. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students read a model story about a day at the beach and find its parts: a topic sentence that sets the scene, events in order joined by time words (first, next, suddenly, finally), details that use the senses, a feeling, and a concluding sentence. They practise ordering events, improving plain sentences with details, and using past tense verbs, then plan and write their own narrative paragraph about a day they will never forget.

Grade 5 / intermediate English learners (ages 10–11) 50 minutes Writing sequencing past tense adding detail describing feelings editing

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the parts of a narrative paragraph: topic sentence, events in order, details and feelings, and a concluding sentence.
  • Use time words and past tense verbs to tell events in order.
  • Plan and write a narrative paragraph about a real experience.

Lesson Procedure

  • Read the model paragraph in the lesson plan together and label its parts with the slides.
  • Use worksheet activities 1 to 5 to practise the skills, then let students write in activity 6.
  • Give the quiz the next day and use the rubric to mark the paragraph.
  • Send the homework planning page home and use the A5 flashcards to review the writing words.

Assessment

The quiz (14 points) checks parts of a narrative, time words and past tense. Use the rubric to mark the paragraph in activity 6 on structure, order, detail and grammar.

Differentiation

Support: give a paragraph frame with sentence starters (Last…, First…, Then…, Suddenly…, Finally…, It was…). Challenge: ask students to add dialogue or a surprising ending.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Story strips: cut a model paragraph into sentences and let groups put it back in order.
  • Sense words: list what you might see, hear, smell, taste and feel at a beach, a market or a party.
  • Author's chair: students read their paragraph aloud while classmates listen for the time words.

Teacher Tips

Ask students to plan before they write: who, where, what happened, and how it ended. A 2-minute plan makes paragraphs much more organized.
