At, On or In? Prepositions of Time

About This Resource

A free Grade 6 ESL grammar worksheet pack on prepositions of time: at for clock times, on for days and dates, in for months, years and seasons, common exceptions such as at night and in the morning, and before, after and during. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Students learn a simple pyramid for at, on and in: at for exact times (at 7:30, at noon), on for days and dates (on Monday, on July 4th), and in for longer periods (in May, in 2025, in winter). They practise the fixed phrases at night, in the morning and on my birthday, use before, after and during, sort time expressions, correct errors and write about their weekly timetable.

Student Task

  • Draw the at-on-in pyramid on the board: at at the narrow top (exact times), on in the middle (days), in at the wide base (months, years, seasons).
  • Teach the rules and exceptions, then do activities 1 and 2 together.
  • Students complete activities 3 to 5; answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use
