Big and Small: Opposites for Kindergarten

About This Resource

A complete Kindergarten ESL pack on opposites: big and small, hot and cold, fast and slow, happy and sad, up and down, open and closed, with picture matching, actions and simple sentences. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn that opposites are words that mean completely different things. With big pictures and actions they learn eight common pairs, match each word to its opposite, choose the right word for a picture and say simple sentences such as "The elephant is big. The mouse is small." The lesson is full of movement, so every child can join in.

Learning Objectives

  • Name eight pairs of opposites with pictures and actions.
  • Match a word to its opposite.
  • Say a simple sentence with an opposite word: "The elephant is big."

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the flashcards in pairs (big and small, hot and cold) and do an action for each word.
  • Play the opposites game from the slides, then do worksheet activities 1 to 5 together.
  • Use the quiz one to one and send the homework page home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Opposites actions: the teacher says big and children stretch up tall; the teacher says small and they curl up.
  • Find my partner: give half the class a word card and half its opposite; children find their partner.
  • Opposites hunt: children find something big and something small in the classroom.

Differentiation

Support: start with three pairs (big/small, hot/cold, happy/sad). Challenge: children say a full sentence for both words in a pair.

Assessment

Use the quiz and the picture activities to check the words. Use the rubric while children say sentences about the pictures.

Teacher Tips

Always teach opposites in pairs and with actions. Children remember big and small far better when they stretch and shrink their bodies.
