I Can Run! Action Verbs for Kindergarten

About This Resource

A complete Kindergarten ESL pack on action verbs: run, jump, swim, dance, sing, clap, sleep and climb, with the sentences "I can …" and "Can you …? Yes, I can." Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Children learn eight action words by doing them: they run on the spot, jump, swim with their arms, dance, sing, clap, pretend to sleep and climb. They use the action words in short sentences ("I can jump."), ask a friend "Can you swim?", play Simon Says, and match each picture to its word. The lesson is active, so even the shyest children join in.

Learning Objectives

  • Name eight action verbs and show each one with an action.
  • Say "I can …" to talk about what they can do.
  • Ask and answer "Can you …?" with "Yes, I can." or "No, I can't."

How to Use This Resource

  • Teach the action words with the flashcards: show a card, say the word and do the action together.
  • Play Simon Says from the slides, then do worksheet activities 1 to 5.
  • Use the quiz to check the words and send the homework page home.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Simon Says: "Simon says jump!" Children only move when they hear "Simon says".
  • Action charades: a child acts out a card and the class guesses the word.
  • Freeze dance: play music; when it stops, call out an action word and children do it.

Differentiation

Support: start with four actions (run, jump, clap, sleep) and use the flashcards for every activity. Challenge: children ask a friend "Can you …?" and report back "Mia can swim."

Assessment

Use the quiz and the picture activities to check vocabulary. Use the rubric while children say "I can …" sentences.

Teacher Tips

Always say the word while doing the action. Children remember verbs much better when their bodies are moving.
