Big Numbers, Neat Columns: Adding and Subtracting Multi-Digit Numbers

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 math lesson pack on adding and subtracting multi-digit whole numbers up to 100,000: lining up place values, regrouping across several columns, subtracting across zeros, estimating by rounding, checking subtraction with addition, and solving real-world problems with distances, populations and money. Includes slides with worked examples, a timed lesson plan, flashcards, worksheet, quiz, homework, rubric and answer key.

Overview

Students use the standard column method to add and subtract four- and five-digit numbers. They line up ones, tens, hundreds, thousands and ten thousands, regroup when a column adds up to 10 or more, and trade from the next column when they cannot subtract, including across zeros (40,005 − 12,368). They estimate first by rounding to check that answers are reasonable, check subtraction by adding, spot mistakes, and solve two-step word problems about stadium crowds, journeys and savings.

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 60 minutes Place value addition subtraction regrouping estimation problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard column method.
  • Regroup across one or more columns, including subtracting across zeros.
  • Estimate to check answers and solve multi-step word problems.

How to Use This Resource

  • Start with slide 1: two numbers of fans at a stadium. Ask, "About how many fans came on both days?" and estimate together.
  • Teach lining up place values, regrouping, subtracting across zeros and checking with the slides, letting students try each worked example first.
  • Students complete the worksheet, then use the quiz to check and the homework for practice. Answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Place value mat: students build numbers with base-ten blocks or place value disks and physically trade when regrouping.
  • Estimation station: students estimate each sum by rounding before calculating, and score a point when their estimate is within 1,000.
  • Real data: students find the populations of two nearby towns or the heights of two mountains and calculate the total and the difference.

Differentiation

Support: start with four-digit numbers and one regrouping, and use place value grid paper. Challenge: work with six-digit numbers, solve problems with missing digits and write their own two-step word problems.

Assessment

Worksheet activities and the quiz check column addition and subtraction, estimating and checking (answer key included). Word problems and error explanations are checked with the rubric.

Teacher Tips

Ask students to write the place value headings (TTh, Th, H, T, O) above their columns until lining up becomes automatic. When subtracting across zeros, show the regrouping on a place value mat first: 40,005 becomes 3 ten thousands, 9 thousands, 9 hundreds, 9 tens and 15 ones.
