Careful or Careless? Suffixes -ful and -less

About This Resource

A free Grade 4 ESL vocabulary worksheet pack on the suffixes -ful (full of) and -less (without): building adjectives such as helpful, hopeless, colorful and fearless, opposite pairs, the spelling change from y to i (beautiful), choosing the right word in context and writing sentences. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that a suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word. The suffix -ful means full of (careful, helpful, joyful) and -less means without (careless, helpless, homeless). Students build adjectives, find opposite pairs such as careful and careless, learn the spelling rule for words ending in y (beauty → beautiful, penny → penniless), choose words to complete sentences, read a short story about a fearless firefighter and write their own sentences.
