Beep Beep! Transportation Words for Kindergarten

About This Resource

A free Kindergarten ESL worksheet pack on transportation: ten vehicle words (car, bus, bike, train, plane, boat, ship, truck, taxi, helicopter), sorting vehicles by land, water and air, the question "How do you go to school?", a picture chant and a draw-and-say task. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Children learn ten vehicle words with pictures, sounds and actions. They sort vehicles into land, water and air, answer "How do you go to school?" with "I go by bus." or "I walk.", match vehicles to where they travel, choose the right word for each picture and draw how they come to school. The lesson includes a chant, a traffic-light game and a class survey, so children hear and say each word many times.

Kindergarten ESL (ages 5–6), pre-A1 40 minutes Vocabulary listening speaking sorting drawing

Student Task

  • Make vehicle sounds (beep beep, choo choo) and let children guess the vehicle.
  • Teach the words with the chant and actions, then do activities 1 to 3 together.
  • Children do activities 4 to 6 with help; answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Sound game: make a vehicle sound and children hold up the matching picture or say the word.
  • Traffic lights: children drive around the room with paper steering wheels; red means stop, green means go, yellow means slow.
  • Class survey: make a tally chart of how children come to school and count the totals together.

Differentiation

Support: teach five vehicles first (car, bus, bike, boat, plane) and let children point instead of writing. Challenge: children say a full sentence about each vehicle, such as "A boat goes on water."

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1 to 5 check the words and sorting (answer key included). Listen to each child answer "How do you go to school?" in activity 6.

Learning Objectives

  • Name ten vehicles: car, bus, bike, train, plane, boat, ship, truck, taxi and helicopter.
  • Sort vehicles that travel on land, on water and in the air.
  • Ask and answer "How do you go to school?" with "I go by …" or "I walk."

Teacher Tips

Give each vehicle an action: turn a wheel for a car, pedal for a bike, spread your arms for a plane. Children remember words much faster when they move.
