Clap the Beat: Syllables and Word Stress

About This Resource

A free Grade 4 ESL pronunciation lesson on syllables and word stress: clapping syllables, hearing the stressed syllable (ba-NA-na, TEA-cher, ho-TEL) and sorting two-syllable words by stress. Includes a timed lesson plan with a teacher script, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Students learn that English words are made of syllables and that one syllable in each word is stressed: it is louder, longer and higher. They clap syllables, listen for the stressed syllable in words like banana, computer and elephant, sort two-syllable words by stress, and discover a useful pattern: most two-syllable nouns are stressed on the first syllable (TEA-cher, PEN-cil), with some exceptions (ho-TEL, gi-RAFFE).

Learning Objectives

  • Count the syllables in common English words.
  • Hear and say the stressed syllable in two- and three-syllable words.
  • Notice that most two-syllable nouns are stressed on the first syllable, and learn some exceptions.

Lesson Procedure

  • Clap syllables together and show stress with a big clap on the stressed syllable.
  • Read the words in activity 1 aloud from the teacher script (in the answer key); students choose the stress pattern.
  • Students complete activities 2 to 6 and practise saying the words with a partner.

Assessment

Activities 1 to 5 check syllables and stress (answer key included). Listen to students say five words aloud and note whether they stress the right syllable.

Differentiation

Support: work only with two-syllable words first and keep the clapping going for every word. Challenge: compare REC-ord (a noun) and re-CORD (a verb) and make sentences with both.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Stress stand-up: say a word; students stand up on the stressed syllable.
  • Name rhythm: students clap the syllables of their own names and find the stressed syllable.
  • Dictionary detectives: find the stress mark for five new words in a dictionary.

Teacher Tips

Make stress visible: clap loudly or step forward on the stressed syllable and clap softly on the others. Write stressed syllables in capital letters on the board.
