Divide with Decimals: Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers and Decimals

About This Resource

A complete Grade 6 math lesson pack on dividing decimals: estimating first, long division with a decimal dividend, placing the decimal point in the quotient, adding zeros to keep dividing, making the divisor a whole number by multiplying by 10 or 100, and solving money and measurement problems. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn to divide decimals fluently. They estimate first, use long division with a decimal dividend and line up the decimal point in the quotient, add zeros to keep dividing, and turn a decimal divisor into a whole number by multiplying both numbers by 10 or 100 (4.8 ÷ 0.6 becomes 48 ÷ 6). They practise twelve division problems, divide by decimals, check with multiplication and solve real-world problems about sharing money, cutting ribbon and pouring juice.

Grade 6 (ages 11–12) 60 minutes Decimal division long division estimation place value problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Divide a decimal by a whole number using long division.
  • Divide by a decimal by first making the divisor a whole number.
  • Estimate and check quotients and solve real-world decimal division problems.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and model 36.54 ÷ 9 with long division, then 4.8 ÷ 0.6.
  • Use the flashcards to review key terms, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the shopping homework; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Bill splitter: give groups a restaurant bill and have them split it equally.
  • Ribbon cutting: measure a ribbon and work out how many 0.25 m pieces it makes, then cut to check.
  • Error analysis: give worked examples with a misplaced decimal point; students find and fix them.

Differentiation

Support: use place value charts and divide by one-digit whole numbers only. Challenge: divide by two-digit decimals and round quotients to the nearest hundredth.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check division accuracy and decimal placement (answer keys included). Use the rubric for explanations and word problems.

Teacher Tips

Always estimate first. If 36.54 ÷ 9 is about 36 ÷ 9 = 4, then an answer of 40.6 or 0.406 is clearly wrong, and students can fix the decimal point themselves.
