Groups of Fractions: Multiplying Fractions by Whole Numbers

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 math lesson pack on multiplying a fraction by a whole number: repeated addition, unit fractions, models and number lines, multiplying the numerator, simplifying and writing mixed numbers, and solving recipe and measurement word problems. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that multiplying a whole number by a fraction means equal groups of that fraction: 3 × 2/5 is 2/5 + 2/5 + 2/5 = 6/5. They connect repeated addition to multiplying the numerator by the whole number, use fraction bars and number lines, write answers in simplest form and as mixed numbers, and solve recipe, running and ribbon problems.

Learning Objectives

  • Multiply a fraction by a whole number using models and repeated addition.
  • Multiply the numerator by the whole number and keep the denominator.
  • Solve word problems involving a whole number times a fraction.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and model 3 × 1/4 with fraction strips or measuring cups.
  • Use the flashcards for quick practice, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the recipe homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Measuring cups: pour 1/4 cup of rice three times and see that 3 × 1/4 = 3/4 cup.
  • Number line hops: students hop 2/3 four times along a number line to find 4 × 2/3.
  • Recipe doubling: students double or triple a simple recipe with fraction amounts.

Differentiation

Support: use unit fractions (such as 1/5) and fraction strips. Challenge: solve two-step problems and multiply mixed numbers by whole numbers.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check multiplying fractions by whole numbers (answer keys included). Use the rubric for models, explanations and word problems.

Teacher Tips

Read 4 × 2/3 as "4 groups of two-thirds". This language links the new skill to what students know about multiplication as equal groups.
