Same Bottom, Add the Top! Adding Fractions with Like Denominators

About This Resource

A complete Grade 4 math lesson pack on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators: using fraction strips and number lines, adding numerators while the denominator stays the same, simplifying, writing improper fractions as mixed numbers and solving word problems. Includes a lesson plan, worksheet, quiz, homework, A5 flashcards, a rubric, detailed slides with speaker notes, Word files and answer keys.

Overview

Students learn that when fractions have the same denominator, they are counting the same size of parts, so they add (or subtract) the numerators and keep the denominator. They model with fraction strips and number lines, practise twelve additions, write answers in simplest form and as mixed numbers when the total is more than one whole, subtract like fractions and solve real-life problems about pizza, ribbon and running.

Grade 4 (ages 9–10) 55 minutes Fractions addition subtraction simplifying problem solving

Learning Objectives

  • Add and subtract fractions with like denominators.
  • Explain why the denominator stays the same when adding like fractions.
  • Write sums greater than one as mixed numbers and simplify answers.

How to Use This Resource

  • Show the slides and model 2/8 + 3/8 with fraction strips.
  • Use the flashcards for quick practice, then complete the worksheet.
  • Use the quiz to check learning and send the homework home; answers are in the answer keys.

Classroom Activity Ideas

  • Pizza fractions: cut a paper pizza into eighths; students add slices eaten by two friends.
  • Fraction strip race: pairs build sums with strips and write the number sentence.
  • Number line jumps: students jump along a number line in sixths to show addition.

Differentiation

Support: use fraction strips and keep sums less than one whole. Challenge: add three fractions and add mixed numbers with like denominators.

Assessment

The worksheet and quiz check adding and subtracting like fractions (answer keys included). Use the rubric for explanations and word problems.

Teacher Tips

Watch for the common mistake of adding the denominators (1/4 + 1/4 = 2/8). Ask: "Did the pieces get smaller?" Fraction strips show that the size of the parts does not change.
