Grade 1 ESL Test: Clothes — Paper and Speaking Check (30 Marks)

Question Types & Suggested Use

Paper 20 marks (5 + 5 + 5 + 5) + speaking 10 marks (5 items × 2) = 30. Bands: 27–30 Excellent, 21–26 Good, 15–20 Developing, 0–14 Needs practice.

Skills Assessed

• Name 12 clothes: T-shirt, shirt, pants, shorts, skirt, dress, socks, shoes, flip-flops, hat, cap, raincoat.
• Ask and answer "What's this? – It's a cap." and "What are these? – They're socks.", including pants and shorts.
• Say a color with a clothes word in the right order ("a red cap") and answer "What color is it?"
• Follow and give simple instructions: "Put on your hat!" / "Take off your shoes!"
• Say what to put on for sunny and rainy weather ("It's rainy. Put on your raincoat.").
• Read a short text (Mai's Clothes) and write 2–3 sentences about their school uniform and favorite clothes.

How to Administer

• Read the listening script on the answer key two times for Part A. While the class does Parts B–D, call children one at a time for the Speaking Check (page 3). Record all scores on the class record (page 4).

Differentiation

Support: Teach 8 words in Lesson 1 (T-shirt, pants, shorts, dress, socks, shoes, hat, raincoat) and add the rest in Lesson 2. Let children point before they speak, and keep the It's a / They're cards on the board. In writing, children copy from the word bank and the example sentences.

Extension: Children describe a classmate ("Nam has a white shirt and blue shorts."), add more colors (gray, brown), or learn the Grade 2 words sweater and jacket. Strong readers read Mai's Clothes aloud and write about their weekend clothes.

Follow-Up Activities

• Practise the speaking questions in pairs the lesson before.
• Use the Show-Me Card so every child sees the same pictures.

Teacher Tips

Bring a bag of real clothes — a big T-shirt, a cap, a pair of socks and a raincoat. Children who feel, guess, put on and take off real clothes remember the words far better than children who only see pictures. Fix "It's a pants" in Lesson 1 with one gesture: walk two fingers like legs — "Two legs: They're pants! They're shorts!" And build color phrases with cards on the board ([a] [red] [cap]): in Thai, Vietnamese, Lao, Khmer, Malay and Indonesian the color comes after the thing, so "a cap red" is the mistake to expect.
