Grade 1 (ages 6–7) 40 minutes Addition facts part–whole thinking mental math problem solving

Student Task

  • Start with ten counters or ten fingers and show different ways to split them.
  • Model a number bond diagram on the board (whole at the top, two parts below), then do activity 1 together.
  • Children complete the rest of the worksheet; answers are in the answer key.

Classroom Use

  • Ten-frame flash: show a ten-frame with some dots and children say how many more make 10.
  • Bond partners: give each child a number card from 0 to 10; children find a partner whose number makes 10 with theirs.
  • Shake and spill: shake ten two-color counters in a cup, spill them and write the number bond.

Differentiation

Support: use counters or a ten-frame for every question. Challenge: find every number bond for 10 in order (0 and 10, 1 and 9 …) and explain the pattern.

Answer Key & Assessment

Activities 1 and 2 check missing parts; activities 3 to 5 check pairs to 10 and problem solving (answer key included).

Learning Objectives

  • Explain that two parts join together to make a whole.
  • Find the missing part of a number bond for numbers up to 10.
  • Know the pairs of numbers that make 10.

Teacher Tips

Use the same words every time: "part, part, whole". Children who can see the bond as a picture find subtraction much easier later.
