Doubles and Near Doubles: Fast Addition Facts

About This Resource

A free Grade 1 lesson and worksheet on doubles and near doubles: learning doubles facts to 10 + 10, using a double to solve a near double (6 + 7 = 6 + 6 + 1), splitting even numbers into doubles and solving doubles story problems. Includes a timed lesson plan, worksheet, editable Word version and answer key.

Overview

Children learn the doubles facts (1 + 1 up to 10 + 10) with fingers, dominoes and mirror pictures, then use them as a strategy for near doubles: if 6 + 6 = 12, then 6 + 7 is one more, 13. They split even numbers into two equal parts, solve near doubles quickly and explain their thinking in short story problems.
