Grade 10 My Future Plan Writing Activity

About This Resource

A guided writing task in which Grade 10 ESL students plan and write a paragraph describing their future plans, practising going to for their main plan, will for a prediction, and career vocabulary.

Overview

This activity takes students through the full process of planning before writing. Students first complete a planning table covering their main plan, why they chose it, a prediction about their future, and a backup option in case things change. A Useful Language section models phrases for stating a plan, giving a reason, and making a prediction, and students then write a paragraph of at least 80 words. A self-check list and a full model example paragraph are included so students can compare their own writing against a strong sample after finishing.

How to Use This Resource

Introduce the task by explaining that students will describe their real plans for after school — or, if they prefer, a plan they are still considering. Have students complete the planning table before writing; the "backup plan" step is often new to students and benefits from a quick whole-class example first. Once planning is done, give students time to write their paragraph independently, referring back to the Useful Language box as needed. After writing, have students use the self-check list to review their own work, then share the model example paragraph so they can see one way the task could be completed well.

Classroom Activity Ideas

Once paragraphs are finished, have students swap with a partner and identify one sentence that uses going to or will particularly well, then tell the partner what they liked about it before returning the paragraph.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Allow students to choose a simpler plan and reduce the minimum word count if needed, while still requiring the full plan (main idea, reason, prediction, backup).
ON-LEVEL: Students complete the full planning table and write a paragraph of at least 80 words as designed.
CHALLENGE: Ask stronger students to add a second prediction about their future, or to explain in more detail why their backup plan is a realistic alternative.

Assessment

Use the self-check list as a first-pass student review, then assess the finished paragraph using this topic's Grading Rubric, particularly the Use of Going to / Will and Content and Development of Ideas criteria.

Teacher Tips

Some students may not have a firm plan yet, and that's fine — encourage them to write about whichever option feels most likely right now. The goal is accurate use of going to and will, not a final life decision.
