Grade 2 Base-Ten Blocks Worksheet

About This Resource

A one-page worksheet practicing place value through reading base-ten block diagrams (Part A), stating the hundreds/tens/ones count for a given number (Part B), and a draw-your-own-blocks challenge, using 12 different numbers that deliberately include several zero-placeholder cases.

Overview

Part A and Part B are deliberately the REVERSE skill of each other: Part A gives students a picture and asks for the number; Part B gives students a number and asks for the block breakdown. Together they check that a student's understanding of place value works in both directions, not just one. Numbers throughout (503, 800, 340, 902, 88, 999) were chosen specifically to include zero tens, zero ones, zero hundreds (88), and the maximum case (999) — this is not a random sample, it's built to surface the exact errors Grade 2 students most commonly make with place value.

Student Task

  • Use after the Vocabulary PowerPoint, once students have seen the block legend and at least one zero-placeholder example modeled. Part A works well done independently; Part B is worth reviewing as a class afterward since the "88" row (0 hundreds) and "999" row (maximum digits) are the two most likely to reveal a lingering misconception.

Classroom Use

  • Pair students up: one builds a number with physical or drawn blocks (if available) without saying the number, the partner reads the blocks and writes the number, then they swap. This mirrors Part A under time pressure and peer accountability.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Complete Part B as a whole-class activity first for 456 and 610 (no zero placeholders) before assigning the zero-placeholder rows (902, 88, 999, 305) independently.
ON-LEVEL: Completes both parts and the Challenge independently.
CHALLENGE: For the Challenge, also write 256 in expanded form and word form in addition to drawing the blocks.

Answer Key & Assessment

Score Part A out of 6 and Part B out of 18 (6 numbers x 3 place values each). Assess the Challenge qualitatively — accept any correct block count even if the drawing isn't neatly arranged, using the Grade 2 Place Value Unit Grading Rubric (once available).

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to read a base-ten block diagram and write the number it represents, including numbers with a zero in the tens and/or ones place.
  • Students will be able to state the number of hundreds, tens, and ones in a given 3-digit (or 2-digit) number.
  • Students will be able to construct their own base-ten block representation of a given number.

Teacher Tips

Watch how students handle "88" in Part B — a student who writes "0" in the Hundreds column has correctly understood that a 2-digit number simply has zero hundreds, not "no hundreds place at all." A student who leaves that cell blank instead of writing 0 is showing a subtly different (and worth correcting) misunderstanding.
