Grade 2 Place Value Word Problems

About This Resource

A one-page word problems activity built around an original scenario ("The School Supply Drive") that applies place value reasoning — reading hundreds/tens/ones descriptions, identifying zero-placeholder digits, and comparing numbers — in a real-world context, followed by comprehension questions, a block-drawing section, a true/false check, a digit challenge bonus, and a write-your-own-problem challenge.

Overview

This is the Math-topic equivalent of a "reading activity" — the connected-text resource that shows place value skills working together in a realistic scenario rather than in isolated drill questions. The passage deliberately describes each number two ways (in words — "3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 6 ones" — and in standard form — "342") so students practice translating between the two, and ends with an explicit comparison ("3 hundreds is more than 2 hundreds") modeling the exact reasoning language expected throughout this topic.

Student Task

  • Use after the Expanded Form and Comparing Numbers Worksheet, once students are comfortable with all three number representations and comparing hundreds first. Read the passage aloud as a class first, then have students complete Parts A-C independently or in pairs.

Classroom Use

  • After reviewing answers, have small groups invent their own two-room supply drive scenario (their own two numbers, in the same format as the passage) and present it to another group, who must identify which room collected more and why.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Complete Part B (True/False) first as a whole-class activity, then allow the passage to stay visible while answering Part A.
ON-LEVEL: Completes all parts, the Bonus, and the Challenge independently after one read-aloud.
CHALLENGE: For the Write Your Own Problem challenge, write two problems — one where the answer requires comparing two numbers, not just building one.

Answer Key & Assessment

Score Part A out of 5 and Part B out of 4. Assess Part C (Draw the Blocks) and both the Digit Challenge Bonus and the Write Your Own Problem Challenge qualitatively using the Grade 2 Place Value Unit Grading Rubric.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to extract a specific place value fact (a digit count, a zero placeholder, a comparison) from a short real-world scenario.
  • Students will be able to judge true/false statements against place value details stated in the text.
  • Students will be able to draw a base-ten block representation of a number described in a word problem.
  • Students will be able to construct their own place value word problem for a given hundreds/tens/ones combination.

Teacher Tips

Question 5 ("Did Room 12 or Room 14 collect more items? Explain using hundreds.") is the passage's most diagnostic item — a student who answers correctly but explains using ones or tens instead of hundreds has the right answer for the wrong reason, and hasn't yet internalized "always compare hundreds first."
