Grade 2 My Clothes Reading Activity

About This Resource

A one-page reading comprehension activity built around an original 8-sentence passage ("Getting Dressed") that uses 6 My Clothes vocabulary words in context, followed by comprehension questions, a true/false check, a word-hunt scanning task, an unscramble bonus, and a personal writing challenge.

Overview

This is the topic's first connected-text resource — everything before this (PowerPoint, worksheets, flashcards) taught vocabulary in isolation; this passage shows students the words working together in real sentences. The passage is deliberately simple (short sentences, present tense, one idea per sentence) and follows Leo through getting dressed, touching both tops/bottoms and outerwear/accessories vocabulary in a natural order. Comprehension questions require students to read for detail, not just recognize a word, and the Challenge bridges from the fictional character back to the student's own life.

Grade 2 30-40 Minutes Reading Clothes

Student Task

  • Use this after the prior My Clothes resources (PowerPoint, Tops and Bottoms Worksheet, Outerwear and Accessories Worksheet, and ideally the What Are You Wearing? Worksheet, since the Challenge extends into personal sentence-writing). Read the passage aloud as a class first, then have students complete Parts A-C independently or in pairs. The Word Hunt (Part C) works well as a first pass before the comprehension questions — it gets students scanning the text before they have to answer in full sentences. The Unscramble bonus rewards students who finish early.

Classroom Use

  • After reviewing answers, have students retell the story of "Getting Dressed" out loud in their own words, item by item, as a whole-class sequencing/speaking activity — this rehearses the vocabulary in connected speech, not just isolated recall.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Complete the Word Hunt first as a whole-class activity, then allow the passage to stay visible while answering Parts A and B.
ON-LEVEL: Completes all three parts, the Unscramble bonus, and the Challenge independently after one read-aloud.
CHALLENGE: Writes a 4-6 sentence paragraph for the Challenge instead of 2-3, including at least one outerwear/accessories word in addition to the required clothing words.

Answer Key & Assessment

Score Part A and Part B out of 9 (5 comprehension questions + 4 true/false). Part C (Word Hunt) and the Unscramble bonus are self-checking and mainly build scanning/decoding confidence rather than testing new content. Assess the Challenge qualitatively for correct use of at least 2 clothing words.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to answer literal comprehension questions about a short connected passage using the target vocabulary.
  • Students will be able to judge true/false statements against details stated in the text.
  • Students will be able to locate specific vocabulary words within a short passage.
  • Students will be able to write 2-3 original sentences about what they wear when it is cold, using at least 2 clothing words.

Teacher Tips

Watch True/False Question 4 ("Leo wears a dress and a skirt at the same time.") closely — a student who marks this "True" is likely pattern-matching on the earlier sentence "Sometimes I wear a skirt or a dress instead" without registering the word "or." That's a useful, low-stakes signal of whether a student is reading carefully for logical connectors or skimming for familiar words.
