Grade 2 Where Is It? Prepositions Worksheet

About This Resource

A one-page grammar worksheet teaching four prepositions of place (in, on, under, next to) using the My Home vocabulary already learned — 8 fill-in-the-blank sentences, a draw-and-label task, and 3 real-photo description questions using the Living Room photo from the topic's PowerPoint.

Overview

This worksheet is the grammar companion to the My Home vocabulary resources — it takes the rooms and furniture words students already know and teaches them to describe where things are, not just what they are. Part A drills the four prepositions in short sentences built from the topic's own vocabulary (bed, table, refrigerator, sofa, bathtub, garden, wall, dining room table). Part C has students generate their own example by drawing. Part B is genuine open-ended description practice: students look at a real photograph and produce their own sentences using a specified preposition, which is meaningfully harder than filling in a blank.

Student Task

  • Use this worksheet after the My Home Vocabulary PowerPoint and both vocabulary worksheets, since it assumes students already know the room and furniture words used in every sentence. Introduce the four prepositions using the Word Box at the top — consider acting each one out physically (put a book "in" a bag, "on" a desk, "under" a chair, "next to" a pencil) before students begin Part A. Part B is the most demanding section; model one example on the board before releasing students to it independently.

Classroom Use

  • Play a quick "Simon Says" style game using classroom objects and the four prepositions ("Put your pencil under your book," "Put your hand next to your ear") before starting the worksheet, so students have a physical, embodied sense of each preposition before using it in writing.

Differentiation

SUPPORT: Complete Part A only, with the Word Box definitions visible throughout; skip Part B and Part C or complete them together as a class.
ON-LEVEL: Completes Parts A, B, and C independently.
CHALLENGE: Writes one additional sentence for Part B using a preposition not explicitly requested by the question.

Answer Key & Assessment

Score Part A out of 8. Assess Part B and Part C qualitatively — correct preposition use and a sentence that's actually true of the photo/drawing, not a single fixed answer.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will be able to correctly use "in," "on," "under," and "next to" in a fill-in-the-blank sentence.
  • Students will be able to produce an original sentence using a specified preposition to describe a real photograph.
  • Students will be able to draw and label a scene that correctly illustrates one preposition of their choosing.

Teacher Tips

Part B is intentionally open-ended rather than fill-in-the-blank — accept any grammatically correct sentence that's actually true of the photo. A student who writes "The armchair is next to the sofa" instead of the expected "next to" pairing should still get credit; the goal is correct preposition use, not a single memorized answer.
